Parang, Sulu

Environment, Culture and Tourism, Opportunity, Zero Exclusion, Affordable Energy

Barangay Alu Layag-layag is in the municipality of Parang in the province of Sulu. It has a tropical climate with high rainfall and humidity throughout the year. This community is one of the remote and off-grid communities in Sulu that lacks access to reliable and affordable electricity. The locals rely on kerosene lamps, candles, and generators for lighting and power. There is just one way to get to this village, and it takes roughly an hour and a half on a Piaggio from Parang's mainland. A Piaggio is a range of two-wheeled motor vehicles and compact commercial vehicles.

In the past, Sulu has faced difficulties, including security concerns, but initiatives to advance peace and development in the area have been taken. The tenacity and cultural richness of the people of Sulu are often highlighted by those who study more about this region. And the Municipality of Parang is no stranger to this beautiful culture. Parang has a rich cultural and historical legacy. It is well-known for its traditional rhythms and movements, such as the Pangalay dance, and it is also known for its vibrant Yakan fabrics.

But being a town that lies in an off-grid area, there is a need for a power station. Portable power stations are ideal mobility (emergency) power sources for use in and around their home or outside during outdoor activities, allowing locals to utilize their electrical devices at all times.

The portable power station will allow the community to charge and light their houses, schools, health centers, and other facilities, as well as operate numerous appliances and equipment that will improve their education, health, communication, and income generation. The initiative will also empower the community and stimulate local value creation by including them in the installation, operation, and maintenance of the portable power station.

This fundraising campaign intends to provide a portable power station to the GK Batu Itum community in Parang, Sulu. The project aims to improve people's quality of life and livelihood while also helping to promote environmental sustainability and resilience in the face of natural catastrophes and climate change. Your generosity will change the lives of the residents of the community. Your kindheartedness could be life-changing for these families, giving them hope and the opportunity to move forward.
