Patikul, Sulu

Community Infrastructure, No Poverty, Opprtunity, Zero Poverty, Zero Exclusion, Peace, justice and strong institutions

Barangay Buhanginan is in the municipality of Patikul in the province of Sulu. This community has a unique story shaped by its historical and geographical context. The village is situated in a remote place, and the challenging terrain has contributed to its isolation and limited access to resources and opportunities.

The municipality of Patikul is rich in cultural heritage and has a history of complex interactions between different groups. Militant organizations like the Abu Sayyaf, which periodically engage in combat with government forces, have caused Patikul to endure hardships, which resulted in a cycle of violence, relocation, and instability for the inhabitants in the neighbourhood. Despite these challenges, the community has shown resilience and a strong sense of identity. Locals have endured hardships and provided comfort to their neighbor to show solidarity.

A Madrasa in this community represents a safe physical place that is crucial to providing educational and emotional support to families affected by conflicts with the Abu Sayyaf Group and the Government. It offers a safe space for children to learn Islamic values, foster resilience, and promote community cohesion, helping them rebuild their lives after the turmoil they've experienced.

You can make a difference in the lives of the dwellers in Barangay Buhangian by supporting the ongoing construction of a Madrasa in the area. This fundraising campaign aims to raise funds for roofing and painting supplies. By supporting this initiative, you will make a significant difference in the lives of 50 local families.

Your generosity can help to provide them with the resources they need to improve their standard of living and create a brighter future. Your kindheartedness could be life-changing for these families, giving them the hope and opportunity to move forward.

When an act of kindness multiplies, it helps more people. Everyone can help, no matter how small or big. As long as it comes from the heart, we can persuade more people to help. Financial scarcity is not an obstacle to helping those who are in need.

The Islamic Learning Center (Madrasa) is located at Sitio Darayan, Barangay Buhanginan, Patikul Sulu, a formerly isolated, vacated, and less attended barangay for many years due to the conflict between the government forces and the ASG, a violent extremist group. The said barangay was among those recently returned through the Balik Barangay Program. The residents have already returned to their habitual homes. The Balik Barangay Program was a concerted effort of the local government units, PNP, AFP, and NGOs.

The learning centre has a floor area of 29 feet by 35 feet, with two rooms and a spacious porch that can house 100 learners. It also has two restrooms, one for the girls and another for the boys.

The Islamic Learning Center was initiated and sponsored by the Sulu PPO under the leadership of PCOL NARCISO C PARAGAS, Provincial Director, and funded through the ELCAC fund.

The Sulu Chaplain Service Office, headed by its Pastoral Officer PMAJ MOH. ALIH A. ASARI, with the guidance of the Provincial Director through the DPDO PLTCOL GUTIERREZ, has been responsible for supervising the construction and monitoring the progress through the site visit. He is also in charge of the transport of materials and ensures the project reaches its completion.

The facility will be a venue to conduct Islamic learning (Madrasa) and secular education. It can be utilized to hold social activities and Islamic/religious activities such as, but not limited to, the celebration of Eidain (Hariraya Eidl Fitr or Eidl Adha), Mawlideen Nabi S.A.W., and Friday Congregational Prayer.

This effort would not have been possible without the tremendous efforts made to bring it to fruition. Our collective efforts toward a common goal can yield positive results that are truly heartwarming to observe. The beneficiaries of this project extend their sincere appreciation to every single individual who played a role in making it happen. Let us continue to foster our spirit of generosity and work towards creating even stronger and more resilient communities.
